Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa & City Tour
Welcome to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s vibrant capital city. Begin your journey with a guided city tour including the National Museum, home of the famous fossil “Lucy,” the Ethnographic Museum, St. George’s Cathedral, and a scenic drive to Entoto Mountain for panoramic views over the capital. Overnight stay at a hotel.
Day 2: Scenic Drive from Addis Ababa to Harar
Travel eastward through the Great Rift Valley, passing coffee farms, khat plantations, and mountain landscapes on your way to the historic city of Harar. In the evening, experience Harar’s famous hyena feeding tradition outside the ancient city walls. Overnight stay at a hotel.
Day 3: Discover the Historic Walled City of Harar
Explore Harar Jugol, the UNESCO-listed old walled city considered one of Islam’s holiest cities. Visit the Harari Museum, the historic Rimbaud House, the 16th-century Grand Mosque, and the colorful Shoa Gate Market while wandering through the city’s narrow alleyways and traditional Harari houses. Overnight stay at a hotel.
Day 4: Harar, Dire Dawa & Lake Langano Journey
Drive toward Dire Dawa with a stop at Lega Oda to view ancient rock paintings believed to date back to 700 BC. Explore the bustling Kefira Market before flying back to Addis Ababa and continuing south to Lake Langano. En route, stop at Lake Ziway for birdwatching along the lakeshore. Overnight stay at a hotel or lodge.
Day 5: Drive to Bale Mountains National Park
Enjoy a scenic drive into Bale Mountains National Park, passing dramatic valleys, juniper forests, and highland scenery. Arrive in Africa’s largest Afro-alpine moorland ecosystem, famous for its unique wildlife and breathtaking mountain landscapes. Overnight stay in a lodge or campsite.
Day 6: Full Day Bale Mountains Wildlife Exploration
Spend the day exploring Bale Mountains National Park’s diverse ecosystems and searching for endemic wildlife including the Mountain Nyala and the rare Ethiopian Wolf, often seen on the Sanetti Plateau. The park also offers excellent birdwatching and incredible high-altitude scenery. Overnight stay in a lodge or campsite.
Day 7: Afro-Alpine Plateau & Wildlife Discovery
Continue exploring the spectacular Bale Mountains high plateau, known for its fresh mountain air, sweeping views, endemic mammals, and soaring birds of prey. Enjoy scenic walks and wildlife viewing opportunities across the Afro-alpine moorlands. Overnight stay in a lodge or campsite.
Day 8: Lake Awassa, Senkelle Sanctuary & Return to Addis
Drive back toward Addis Ababa with a stop at Lake Awassa to visit the lakeside fish market and observe aquatic birdlife. Continue to Senkelle Wildlife Sanctuary before arriving in Addis Ababa. In the evening, enjoy a farewell cultural dinner with traditional Ethiopian music and dance performances.
