Full Day: Debre Libanos Monastery Tours & Jemma River Gorge
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive north from Addis Ababa through the Sululta plains, an area known for its birdlife and panoramic landscapes. Upon reaching Debre Libanos Monastery, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, you will explore the monastery complex, including the beautiful church commissioned by Emperor Haile Selassie. Visitors may also visit the cave where Saint Tekle Haymanot is believed to have prayed for many years. The monastery museum contains a collection of religious artifacts, ancient manuscripts, and historical relics that highlight Ethiopia’s deep spiritual traditions.
Continuing onward, the impressive Jemma River Gorge reveals dramatic views of steep escarpments and rugged landscapes. A highlight of the visit is the historic Portuguese Bridge, dating back to the 16th century and offering excellent viewpoints over the gorge and surrounding valleys. The region is also home to Gelada baboons and a variety of bird species unique to the Ethiopian Highlands.
