Trek across dramatic escarpments, deep valleys, Afro-alpine landscapes, and remote villages while encountering endemic wildlife such as Gelada baboons, Walia Ibex, and the rare Ethiopian Wolf.
Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Gondar to Sankaber Camp (3,250m)
Drive from Gondar to Debark for trekking permits before entering Simien Mountains National Park. Begin with an easy introductory hike along the dramatic northern escarpment, offering spectacular views of the surrounding lowlands and opportunities to encounter Gelada baboons before reaching Sankaber campsite.
Day 2: Trek from Sankaber to Gich Camp (3,600m)
Follow the escarpment eastward across the Kaba Valley toward the impressive Gich Abyss. Stop to admire the spectacular Jinbar Waterfall before continuing through barley fields and mountain scenery to the remote village of Gich. End the day with a sunset walk to Kedadit viewpoint.
Day 3: Gich to Chennek via Inatye Peak (3,600m)
Trek across Afro-alpine meadows filled with Giant Lobelia plants toward the dramatic cliffs of Imet Gogo. Descend into the Jinbar Valley before climbing to the summit of Inatye Peak (4,070m), known for its panoramic mountain views. Continue to Chennek camp, where Walia Ibex are often spotted near the cliffs.
Day 4: Chennek to Ambiko Camp (3,200m)
Ascend toward the Buwahit Pass (4,200m) for incredible views of the Ras Dashen mountain range. Descend through the Menesha River Valley and local villages before arriving at Ambiko campsite in preparation for the summit climb.
Day 5: Summit Ras Dashen (4,533m) & Return to Ambiko
Start before dawn for the challenging ascent to Ras Dashen, the highest mountain in Ethiopia. Trek through Afro-alpine landscapes and rocky terrain before reaching the summit and enjoying spectacular panoramic views across the Simien Mountains. Descend back to Ambiko camp for an overnight rest.
Day 6: Ambiko to Chiro Leba & Return to Gondar
Retrace your route toward Chiro Leba while enjoying final views of the Simien escarpments and mountain scenery. Meet your vehicle for the return drive to Gondar, marking the end of your trekking adventure.
