Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Mekele to Hamed Ela via the Danakil Depression
Depart from Mekele and journey deep into the Danakil Depression, descending below sea level into one of the most extreme and fascinating environments on the planet. Travel through the desert landscapes of Berhale, where traditional camel caravans transport salt across the region just as they have done for centuries. Continue to the remote settlement of Hamed Ela, where you will witness the breathtaking salt flats during sunset before spending the night at a desert camp under the open sky.
Day 2: Dallol Volcano, Salt Mining & Return to Mekele
Early in the morning, visit Ragad (Asebo) to observe local Afar miners cutting massive salt blocks by hand and loading them onto camel caravans. Continue to the extraordinary geothermal landscapes of Dallol, famous for its vibrant mineral colors, sulphur springs, salt formations, and surreal volcanic scenery. Explore one of the most unique geological sites on Earth before beginning the drive back to Mekele in the afternoon.
